Construction: Sound Effects

Sound Effects

Introduction

We have edited non-diegetic sound in order to create soundtracks, noises, sounds of objects and sound from animals. These sound effects creates and enhances the eerie factor within the opening 2 minutes of 'The girl in white'. For this we needed to make sure that the sound levels weren't too high nor too low so you can hear the audio speech within the footage. When deciding the right sound which could be used in the background we experimented with different kinds of sound that were instrumental sound, natural sound and upbeat sound. in the end we went for natural sound as we felt like it would suit our 'horror movie opening' object the best. Before we decided which sound we wanted to use we research up different horror movie openings so we could compare the music which we found that worked the best, then interpret this into our openings.

Screenshots and list of sound effects

  • Birds chirping with a slight sound of wind in the background
Description
The reason we choose this sound effect was because we wanted there to be a natural feel to the recordings and to make the audience believe that the group of teenagers are deep in the woods with no one around but the sound of small birds and wind to keep them company. The sound of the birds have been placed in each recording that is self and non self recording as birds tend to chirp in day time. This enhances  the idea of the girl in white torturing them in broad day light what gives the opening a more unsettling and strange approach.

  • Wind up creepy musical box
Description
The reason we added this sound effect at the start and end of the opening was to recreate the idea of a little girls being present, even if you couldn't see her you could still hear 'her'. Musical boxes are usually used by girls and while we were choosing which box sound to use we made sure that it was creepy and has tension to insure that the opening would have a unsettling and on edge atmosphere.

  • High pitched sound
Description
When researching horror move opening sounds I found that high pitched sounds and notes made views uncomfortable as the sound can be painful to the ears. By adding this high pithed sound between shots and over shots was used it to represent the uncomfortable present of the girl and the pain she will cause.

Screenshot

  • Humming sound
Description
This sound has only been used once but for the talking seen between the characters in 20 secnds-1 min. We placed this music here because when the charters were having a conversation there was no tension or worry for the characters. The sound now makes those scenes have an eerie atmosphere.

Screenshot

  • Build up suspense sound
Description
This sound effect has been used twice in the opening, once in the scene were the boy gets attacked from behind by the girl and second to the lead up of the boy falling over. The suspense sound was used in these scene to build up the tension and that prepares the audience for something strange and scary to occur.

Screenshot

  • Robotic/human heartbeat with short electronic blurs
Description
The reason this sound effect was used right when people were starting to get hurt, was to give a slow tension to the scenes that became faster and louder when it got closer towards the end of the opening. Also we made sure that the music was in time with the action of the footage to insure that the video runs smoothly. Near the end there is a 2 second silence when the girl touches one of the boy characters, this helps the tension rise and highlight that the girl is crazy and ready to kill and consume them.

Screenshot

  • Static T.V
Description
This sound effect comes seconds before the end of the opening to make the '20 years later' look like it is apart of the recording after she drops the camera.

Screenshot

  • 1970s Turned off T.V
Description
The reason we used this old sound effect was to make the recording seem to be stopped but to also make sure that the sound link with the title '20 years later' when disappearing.

Footage with sound and green screen

Here is the video of the opening horror 'The girl in white'  that contains sound and visual effects.
All sound has been added, the only part left to complete the opening is the titles what will hopefully match the sounds and footage already edited.

Construction: Considering Titles

Tiles

Introduction

We have decided to overlap the titles over the footage to insure that the end result of the opening is more visually appealing. We had to consider the layouts, fonts, sizing and colour to make sure that we pick the best compositions that makes the opening look creepy and interesting. For all titles we kept the same colour which is white, this colour symbolises the girls white dress and that she is everywhere within the film.

1
We started by experimenting with the title 'A film produced by' in Photoshop. We were interested in a range of fonts but we decided on the 8th font as it is sharp but simple, this will straight away tell the audience that the film is going to be scaring or intense.

Chosen layout and font

2
In these screenshot there is evidence that we tried the title 'Cloudy Village Productions' In Photoshop but we didn't find any of the fonts interesting so we looked at the fonts in the premiere pro instead. From these fonts there were two particular fonts and two layouts that stood out to us called Bold Courier and Courier, these founts gave the title a that creepy appearance that we needed. We chose Courier as the size nicely fits on the footage and then the layout of the title was chosen to match the space of the ground in the footage. This was done to insure that the title looks like it is apart of the film and not just randomly placed there.

Chosen Layout and font

3
We decided to place the information titles in the bottom middle of the screen for each one to keep the pattern consistent. The reason for this is that we liked the position as it is out the way of the footage but still noticeable. When we put in all the name of each role and the actors and actresses we made sure that they were place in the same position but for each job, layed out in different areas on the screen.

Visual Effects

Introduction

These Images below are screenshots to show how we have inserted and found a green screen clip From YouTube that we have inserted into our opening. The reason for why we chosen the idea to add a recording clip was to make the self recorded scene look like the footage was from a camera and the recording over layer helped this look become complete.
When searching for the clip we had to make sure that the clip of a recording frame was green, so when editing with the clip it would go within the layers. This would allow us to be left with the filming frame we wanted that was clear and looked professional. When adding the green screen to our first cut we had to paste and repeat the green screen along and cut to the shots because the recording was not long enough for some scene we have used.
We also added an effect over the green screen and footage near the end to make the camera look broken but to also make the screen look dark and gloomy.

Here shows the green screen recording embed onto the computer ready to be imported onto premiere pro.

On this screenshot we have place the green screen on top of the self recording footage

Construction: Evidence Of Raw Footage

Evidence of Raw Footage

The screenshots
While me and my group was editing the raw footage of our horror filming opening, we took screenshots along the way to show the tools and clips we used to create a complete raw footage of our opening.

The main raw footage
This clips shows the first raw footage of our horror filing opening. In this clip there is only the footage for our opening editing together, we haven't added the effects, sounds and any other details needed to be added to complete the film opening. We found that the quality was great as we used a Canon 1200D DSLR camera with a 15-35 lens. Using this high quality camera didn't just help the footage it also helped the sound , sounding clear and match on actioning the movements. There was some issues when filming as on seconded day the weather was not great and did not match the weather the day before. This didn't cause to much of a worry as the rain helped made the capturing scene look extra creepy and scaring.

Construction: Evidence of Filming Taking Place

Behind the scenes

Introduction

These are the behind the scene photos which were taking during the filming process. these include us in the filming process; setting up the sets; directing the actors/actresses.

1 These are pictures to show the filming process and how the camera was set up on the tripod to get a steady camera shot.
